Mexico City home to 20million.so what would you expect to find in the main square 'el Zocalo', well other than tourists snapping the cathedral & national palace?...
Ice skating of course! Winter in the city sees the 'Chilangos' - people of mexico city celebrate the holidays on ice & whilst the day was 15-19C, the night time temperature dropped to 2-5C making the ice skating almost appropriate.
Day 1 I spent strolling the streets, trying the local food & getting over jet lag.
Day 2 I joined some other back packers & headed out to see Teotihuancan. On route we stopped at the Bascillica to see the Guadalupe.
The old Bascillica had a new one build right next door to it in 1970.
Circular in design it enabled all the congregation to see the central service.
& in the centre is the Guadalupe, a miracle picture of the virgin Mary imprinted into the clothes of a local man by the stain of freshly picked roses.
Teotihuancan - a vast area of steep sided pyramids, tourists & hawks flogging all sorts of tat. Interesting to experience, especially having traveled so far to see them.
Mexico City by night - a pre Lucho Libre (Mexican Westling) warm up in a Puqueria drinking Pulque, a cloudy white (or flavored) mildly alcoholic drink made from the Algave plant (a cactus). An acquired taste I'm sure, I was just thankful of the cinnamon flavouring. The texture however was viscous & slightly slimy. The drink however was finished with a "yumm" & big smile ..... as all the locals were watching me expectantly- I'll not be ordering it again!
Lucho Libre - hot & sweaty, loads of bad language & some really bad acting combined into a fun evening that you can only understand if you were there.
Masks, spandex pants & 4 theatrical groups fighting 'good v evil'
colourful & fun filled, the evening was full of laughs
