An interesting journey south from Guadalajara. A delayed take off meant a missed connection in Mexico City airport & a 11.30 arrival into Tuxtla. Travelling by road at night is not recommended in the state of Chiapas (chee-a-paz). The taxi's drove the 40km's to Tuxla at speed, in convoy & we were more than a little spooked when tailed & raced by a smoked out banger that our driver kept blocking from over taking. HE brushed off the incident as nothing but we just felt 100 times safer once inside the Holiday Inn (back packing at the top end of the spectrum!!)
The next morning we set out with back packs on, to the collectivo bus station & squeezed into a mini cab. Karina's Spanish really helped navigate us to the bus station where we boarded a 2hr bus to San Cristobal. The road wound high into the surrounding hills, up through the fog on a journey where over-taking was still applicable to the coach drive irrespective of the fog & trucks on the road :(
After a challenging start we could relax in the pretty colonial town of San Cristobal. A safe & well guarded tourist honey pot, where we spent the rest of the day exploring the city's street, churches before crashing over night in a tranquil garden backpackers.
Food was a Mole chicken, Stuffed Courgettes & a beer or 3. We were also enlightened & education into the Zapatistas strive for a free state of Chiapas.
