Relaxing Lake Chapala
Stunning scenery idyllic setting & just the 2 of us! one of the benefits of being out of season. A retreat high above lake chapala was the location of our final evening.
We explored the Aztec sculptured grounds & peaceful yoga platforms before we relaxed with an hour long full body massage & a swim in thermal baths set WITHIN the Aztec platform.
Road trip to Lake Chapala
Our road trip home had an early stop at some Matlazinca ruins 2 small ceremonial pyramids. We arrived so early we had to let ourselves in!
The entire region grows Noche Buena or (Red Poinsettia)Thousands of farms, each ranging from single huts to hectares of grow tunnels.
We hit the road back to Guadalajara, with Lake Chapala our destination.
We'd just stopped for fuel & decided to push on without a break when we joined the back of this traffic jam, fortunately it was moving; well for cars anyway & we weaved through parked trucks until we understood why. This was one of the reasons we took out a full insurance policy!
Monarch Butterflies - millions of them
We flew back from PV to Guadalajara, hired the most dented hired car I've ever seen, took out every conceivable insurance on it just in case & drove south through the sate of Jalisco & into Michocan. Our destination was a small town of Zitacuaro & a delightful Rancho on its outskirts.
The lodge style ranch with it's 3 chocolate lababors was a haven from the dusty pot hole riddled roads we'd driven to arrive
a peaceful evening of waiter service was extremely pleasant, but with the cool crisp alpine temperatures the pool failed to appeal.
The following morning we were driven up into the surrounding hills.
Mounted a couple of hay burners & rode up hill for an hour. The effort of the horses was evident & I was thankful not to have had to walk it. 50 minutes in to a really enjoyable woodland ride we started to see the odd flutter-bye high up in the cool crisp blue skies. Emerging from the trail into an opening we could see the swarm above us. 10 minutes later we were thick in the middle of it.
The sky, the trees & the path were simply covered in orange & black. The audible sound of millions of beating wing filled the mountain silence.
The pine needles are made to look like leaves. The normally horizontal branches bend under the shear weight of so many tiny creatures.
Respecting the "Don't touch" conservation requests was all but impossible.

Puerto Vallata - A tropical interlude
Just a 45 minute flight from Guadalajara, we were 1,600 metres lower in altitude & lapping up 30C temperatures at 8.30 in the evening. We wa
But we weren't in the mood to relax for long - we set out early the next morning to dive a small group of coastal islands a 45 minute speed boat ride away. The diving wasn't too challenging & in fact had fairly limited visibility. That said it was the perfect refresher dive for K who'd not been suited & booted for a few years.
The islands are the only other place (other than the Galapagos) that provide home to the Blue footed Boobi. (along with the Blue Agave plant used in Tequila - I was starting to get a common colour theme going on!)
We return relaxed & pleasantly tired, & spent the early evening watching the sun sink into the Pacific before heading into the vibrant town for dinner at Buber's shrimp restaurant; a tribute to the Forest Gump movie no less

The Tequila Express
Just what a good wedding hangover needs, a full day all inclusive trip to Tequila on the Tequila Express.
Greeted by the all smiling Mariachi band who played all journey (both there & back) on our full day excursion. The tour included a production tour, sampling & a really loud show, just the recipe needed to blow the excesses of Javier & Elizebeth's wedding out of the system!
a traditional Miador cutting the raw ingredient - The Blue Agava
The open vats of raw sugar before they go into fermenting tanks. Tequila is the one of few alcoholic drinks produced without yeast fermentation. Air borne bacteria & microbes ferment the raw material into that delicious tasting fire water!
The Blue Agava fields litter & now make the surrounding countryside.
A Mexican Wedding
Guadalajara, Mexico
12 hours 50 mins & a hop via Houston had me out of the cold of a London blizzard & into the cool crisp blue skies of Guadalajara city.
Karina & Emma picked me up from the airport & so my 1st Mexican adventure began. 10 days of Wedding, Tequila, road trips & butterflies.
Guadalajara city centre
2 days to adjust to the 6 hour time change were spent looking around the town centre, meeting the family & eating new food !
